Does it contain abrasive grains?

No, it does not. The ceramic fibers work as abrasive materials.

How do you use it?

For the cup type, attach the shank of the sleeve to an automatic tool changer (ATC) on a machining center or other equipments. Then rotate the tool and remove burrs after cutting work on machine. It can also be used with robots, special machines and drilling machines.
For the end type, attach the tool to an electric tool (or machine tool). It can not be used with a pneumatic tool.

What size of burrs can be removed?

The tool aims to remove burrs with the size that can be bent by pushing one’s fingernail against it.

How should I set up the machining conditions?

Refer to the table that shows the recommended initial conditions, such as rotation speed, depth of cut and feed rate.

Is it possible to chamfer or make a corner R portion?

The cup type brush can be used for chamfering or rounding an edge.

Can it be used for wet machining?

The tool can be used for both dry and wet (both oil-based and water-soluble) machining.
Wet machining may improve surface finish quality and tool life.

Are there any negative effects on the surface from using the brush?

The brush is capable of surface finishing, and it can improve surface roughness to around Ra=0.1μm.
XEBEC Brush is developed by applying the technology for XEBEC ceramic stone which is used for mold polishing.
XEBEC Brush does not contain any abrasive grains,thus the brush does not leave any scratches on the surface.
However,depending on the pattern of the brush, there are cases where the appearance looks a little cloudy on aluminum surface which was finished with a diamond cutter.

What is the finishing quality of the brush in terms of grit?

XEBEC brush does not define the grits. It is capable of finishing the surface up to around Ra=0.1μm.

How long is the tool life?

Tool life significantly varies depending on machining conditions, burr condition (size and direction) and workpiece material.
In one case study, where the tool was used for deburring after milling of an oil pan with 1m circumference (material:aluminum), a single brush lasted for 10,000 workpieces (straight line distance of 10,000m=10km)
Example:
Workpiece: Oil pan (automotive engine part)
Material: aluminum
Cutting process: 1m / piece
Result: 10,000 workpieces / brush (total length 10km)

Can the tool be used manually?

The end type brush can be used for hand work. However, the cup type brush can not be used manually because it judders violently. Furthermore, the appropriate depth of cut cannot be kept when using the cup type manually, so deburring and polishing cannot be done suitably.

How should I clean the brush?

Remove the attached dust or coolant by blowing air, etc.

What are the truing and dressing methods?

You can form a brush using a diamond disc blade.

Is it possible to regrind (truing) or re-embed the brush?

You can regrind the brush by forming it using a diamond disc blade. We do not offer regrinding or re-embedding services. For more information, see the maintenance page.

Is it possible to purchase just the sleeve-fastening screw?

Yes, it is possible. XEBEC's genuine parts are recommended. Contact us for the details.

The tip of the sleeve is thinning. Why?

The inner part of the tip of the sleeve is worn out and become thinner as it is gradually ground by the sides of the brush over a long period of use. Replace the sleeve.
It is possible to purchase the outer cylinder of the sleeve alone. Contact us for the details.

Can you produce a tool with shorter tool length?

It is possible to produce a brush that is shorter than the standard specification. However, it is not possible to provide shorter metal parts (i.e. sleeve, shank).

Do you handle special order products?

Yes, we provide services such as extension of bristle length and modification of the brush tip shape. Please contact us for more information.

How much rotation speed is necessary?

Recommended rotation speed is 8,000min-1-10,000min-1.
Because XEBEC Brush Crosshole has high grinding power on the tip, the brush tip needs to be in contact with the machining area (the part where burrs occur). When machining the hole, it is necessary to rotate the brush to expand it by centrifugal force.

Which equipment should I use for the rotating machine?

NC equipment and special machines can be used, but a rotation speed of 8,000min-1-1200min-1 is required.
If the rotation speed does not go up, use an amplifier to increase the rotation speed.

What size of burr can be removed?

The tool aims to remove fine burrs with the burr root thickness of 0.1mm or less (approximately the size that can be bent by pushing one's fingernail against burrs).

What kind of workpiece material can be machined?

Workpiece materials up to HRC65 including stainless steel, aluminum alloy, general steel material, copper and resin.

What size of hole can be machined?

The target hole diameter of the main bore is between 3.5 mm and 20 mm.

Is it possible to use the tool for holes smaller than the 3.5 mm diameter?

The target diameter is set to slightly smaller than the safety value because the tip spreads out a little.
Usually, we recommend inserting without rotation when inserting the brush into the workpiece, but rotating the brush in low speed at around 300min-1 would keep the brush tip together, and it may be possible to insert the brush into a hole that is smaller than the target hole.
In addition, if there is a chamfer on the hole edge, it would be easier to insert the brush, so it may be possible to insert the brush into a hole with a diameter that is smaller than the target hole diameter.

What is the surface roughness after machining?

It is capable of finishing the surface up to around Ra-0.1μm.

Are there any effects on the hole dimensions of the main bore?

There is a possibility that it will be ground by a few μm, although this depends on material and machining conditions.

Will there be any issues by performing wet (oil) machining?

The tool can be used for both dry and wet (both oil-based and water-soluble) machining, so you can use the coolant.
Wet machining may improve surface finish quality and tool life.

Will the brush shape be deformed after machining?

Unlike nylon bristles and wire bristles, XEBEC Brush does not deform after machining (the tip does not spread like toothbrushes), so stable machining is possible.

How much should I move the tool up and down against the crosshole?

Offset the brush when it becomes shorter, the tool is often used by moving the brush about 1mm up and down against the target crosshole.

How long is the tool life (how many workpieces can be machined)?

Based on XEBEC test results, approximately 4,500 holes can be machined. This is over seven times the number of holes that can be machined by nylon brushes containing diamond abrasive grains.

How do I determine the end of tool life?

Aim to replace the tool when it is worn out 10mm.
When the brush is worn out 10mm, it is necessary to increase the rotation speed to expand the brush enough to deburr.

How should I perform tool life management?

Manage the number of machined workpieces. In general cases, users perform a test and record the number of workpieces at which burrs can no longer be removed, and they set the tool life at about 80% to 90% of that number.

I used the tool within the range of target diameter but the brush broke. Why?

In the following cases, it may cause brush damage.

T-shaped hole
If the diameter of the cross hole is equal to or greater the diameter of the main bore. (For example, if the main bore is φ10 mm and the cross hole is φ10 mm or larger.)

Cross-shaped hole
If the diameter of the cross hole is more than 70% of the diameter of the main bore. (For example, if the main bore is φ10 mm and the cross hole is φ7 mm or larger.)

Perform an initial test while monitoring the behavior of the brush tip, and confirm that the brush does not break before use.

Can you produce a brush with a diameter of Φ1.5mm or less?

No, it is not possible. The number of bristles of CH-A12-1.5M (brush diameter Φ1.5mm) is about 7, and tools with less bristles than this are not expected to be effective due to reduced grinding power.

Do you handle special order products?

Yes, we provide services such as extension of bristle length for standard brushes and modification of the brush tip shape. Please contact us for more information.

Why the tool life of the Cutter is so long?

There are three reasons for long tool life of the Cutter;
(1)it can maintain minimum cutting amount,
(2)the contact point of the spherical cutting edge is continuously shifting, and
(3)the Cutter is specially designed for deburring with high-quality material and coating.

How long is the tool life?

The tool life depends on stiffness of workpiece or jig, machining accuracy, and burr size. According to the internal test, the Cutter lasts couple times longer than general carbide end mill.

Is it possible to customize the Cutter such as cutting the tip or shank?

No, we do not deal with cutting service.

Is it possible to re-grind the Cutter?

No, it is not possible. If you re-grind the Cutter, the Cutter shape will be changed. Then the Cutter would not contact to the hole edge. We do not deal with re-grinding request.

Which kind of workpiece materials can be processed?

Not only non-ferrous metal such as aluminum alloy, but also difficult-to-cut materials such as stainless steel or alloy steel can be processed.

Can it be used for aluminum alloy?

According to our internal test, the Cutter could process aluminum alloy without creating build-up edge.

Can it be used for hardened steel? What is the maximum hardness of workpiece material?

We haven’t performed any test with high hardness material.

Can the Cutter remove drill cap burr? 

Yes, but it depends on hardness of the burr.

Which size of burr can be dealt with the Cutter?

If burr root thickness is smaller than the deburring amount, burrs can be removed by the Cutter. We prepare 5 kinds of deburring amount for each cutter diameter. Please refer to How to Use page for details.

What is the recommended coolant?

We have no specified coolant. You can use coolant for other cutting tools (drilling, end mill etc.)

Is it possible to process intermittent cutting?

As same as other cutters, tool life will be extremely shortened for intermittent cutting.

What is the accuracy and the tolerance of the Cutter?

The Cutter is designed for deburring purpose, so that it cannot be used for high-precision processing.

Can we buy one cutter as minimum unit?

Yes, you can purchase the Cutter from 1 unit.

Can we use the Cutter, even if the workpiece has flat surface and cylindrical shape inside?

The Cutter can be dealt with both flat surface hole and cross-hole, so you can combine each Path.

Do secondary burrs occur after using the Cutter?

This is cutting process, so that secondary burrs may be occurred in a precise sense. However, the Cutter has excellent cutting ability, so that any secondary burrs mostly would not occur, unless the Cutter wears out.

How is the accuracy of deburring amount?

Deburring amount will be varied depends on positioning gap of workpiece, or runout of the Cutter. In theory, allowance of deburring amount is within 0.05mm.

Can we buy only the Cutter, not with the Path?

Yes, you can buy only the Cutter. But we recommend you to use the Cutter and the Path together, because it will lead maximum effect for cutting quality and tool life.

Is there any limitation for processing condition?

Yes, please refer to Process Condition page.

If our machine does not meet the recommended spindle speed, how should we set our processing condition?

If your machine doesn’t satisfy the recommended spindle speed, lower the spindle speed and table feed at an equal rate.

Why does deburring amount become uniform with the Cutter & Path?

Tool positioning is calculated precisely for uniform deburring amount.

Is there any expiry date for using the Path?

No. There is no expiry date.

Can we use the Path for other companies’ tool which has the same diameter?

No, it is prohibited to use any other kinds of tool besides the XEBEC Cutter, when using the XEBEC Path.

What is the difference between the XEBEC Path and other path created by trigonometric function or CAD/CAM?

In case of a path by trigonometric function, difference of deburring amount will be up to a few millimeter depending on combination of hole size. In case of a path by CAD/CAM, it will take long time to output a path data, also deburring amount is one kind.

Can we use the Cutter, when cutting edge of cylindrical hole is on casting surface?

No, you cannot use the Cutter for casting surface because of poor dimensional precision. It may cause burr remaining or tool breakage.

Dimensional precision is poor, but is it possible to use the Cutter & Path?

It depends on the level of dimensional precision, but it may cause burr remaining or tool breakage.

Is it possible to receive the Path with other media other than CD (e.g. via email etc.)?

The path is delivered in CD. However, if you cannot use CD in relation with your drive, please contact a distributor in your area.

Is it possible to adjust coordinates on the Path?

Yes, it is possible to adjust coordinates. Make sure to use the incremental path and adjust the start point.

What will be happened, if hole position on the workpiece is misaligned from the original position?

Please use the Path within maximum 0.03mm of cumulative error. Allowable cumulative error for each cutter diameter is described on the Process Condition page. If cumulative error becomes more than allowable cumulative error, it may cause burr remaining or tool breakage.

Do we need any special function to use the Path?

The Cutter and Path requires high-speed and high-accurate machining. It is recommended to use advanced preview control function.

what is the size of one Path file?

Standard size is less than 5KB.

How many lines in one Path file?

In case of cross hole with main bore dia.φ20mm and cross hole dia.φ10mm, the number of program block will be approx. 80 lines, and program capacity is about 2KB. The number of program block can be twice, depending on size combination between primary bore and cross-hole.

What is file format for the Path program?

It is “.txt” format. You can edit the file by general document software on your PC.

What is the content of the Path data? Are program number (O number), other preparatory function (G code), or auxiliary symbol (M code) included in the program?

The Path data contains coordinates data (e.g. X, Y, Z coordinates)only. Please add O number, G code, or M code by yourself. In addition, please note that feeding speed command (F code) is not included in our program.

Is it possible to specify the deburring amount other than 5 kinds of specified ones?

No, it is not possible.

What is the XEBEC Ceramic Stone Flexible Shaft made of?

It is made of ceramic stone for mold polishing. The entire surface of the ceramic stone has grinding power.

What kind of workpiece material can be machined?

Workpiece materials including metals of HRC57 or less such as stainless steel, aluminum alloy, general steel material and copper, as well as resin.

Is it possible to perform deburring on a secondary processing hole?

Yes, it is possible to remove back burrs by contouring.

Is it possible to use with a pneumatic tool?

The shaft will break if you use it at high rotation speed on a pneumatic tool, so be absolutely sure to use it on an electric tool that can control the rotation speed. The maximum rotation speeds are:

What are the size lineups for the XEBEC Stone Flexible Shaft?

For the ball type, there are 5 diameter sizes: Φ3mm, Φ4mm, Φ5mm, Φ6mm and Φ10mm.
For the cylinder type, there are 4 diameter sizes: Φ3mm, Φ4mm, Φ5mm, and Φ6mm.

Is it possible to select the grit?

Select from 3 standard grits (equivalent to #220, #400 or #800).

How long is the tool life?

According to XEBEC test data, the tool life is over 30 times longer than rubber stone with flexible shaft and over 10 times longer than grinding stone with vitrified shaft.

Is it possible to make the stones which diameter is smaller than 3mm?

No, this is not possible, because the shaft diameter is 1.5mm and the embedded part of the shaft would occupy most of the surface area of the ceramic stone.

Is it possible to make a special order item?

Yes, we provide services such as modification of the shape of the grinding stone on the tip of standard products. Contact us for more information.

Is it necessary to use XEBEC Floating Holder?

XEBEC Floating Holder is an optional tool. XEBEC Brush Surface can be used by itself.
XEBEC Floating Holder has the following effects in mass production line.
1. Reduces machining time to adjust the depth of cut and the brush projection amount caused by brush wear (e.g. actual results: reduced by 1/18)
2. Extends tool life (e.g. actual results: extended by 4 times)
3. Stable edge quality

What is the shank diameter?

The shank diameters of the straight shank types are as follows: Φ12mm for FH-ST12 and Φ20mm for FH-ST20.
They can be attached to a wide range of machines, ranging from drilling machines to NC lathe. We also have the BT30 and BT40 types, which are special models for machining centers.

Can tooling be performed only with BT30 and BT40?

Contact us for BT50 and HSK.

Should I attach the floating holder straight shank type?

You can attach it to a machine equipment such as a milling chuck or drilling chuck.

Is it possible to change the spring load?

FH-ST12 includes 3 types of springs with different load, so you can change spring load depending on your desired finishing quality.

Can it be used for wet machining?

Yes, it can be used for both dry and wet machining.

・For dry processing, use a dust collector to collect the dust that may be generated during the processing.
・For wet processing, the holder shall not be exposed to coolant.
・If dust or coolant gets inside the holder, the floating function will not work.

Using with CNC Equipment
・When attaching the floating holder to a machining center, do not use a pull bolt with through-hole (center through pull bolt). If the coolant gets inside the holder, the floating function will not work.
・For horizontal machining center, the floating function may not work if the spring load is low.

Is it possible to use on a horizontal machining center?

For a horizontal machining center, the floating function may not work if the spring load is too weak. For FH-ST12-SL10, use the high-load spring. FH-ST20 can not be used on a horizontal machining center.

What should I do if the floating function doesn't work smoothly?

Sludge may have entered the tool. Disassemble the tool clean the inside. See the instruction manual for the details.

Will it break?

The original ceramic fiber is binded with resin. It is highly resistant to breaking, cracking and chipping.

Why doesn’t the tool get clogged?

Because of its self-sharpening effect. The cutting edges are always regenerated as it is worn out.

What kind of workpieces can be machined?

Metals up to HRC57 including mold material such as NAK80, STAVAX and S45C. Use XEBEC Ceramic Stone Diamond for hard materials with HRC57 or higher (ranging from hardened steel to carbide).

How do you use it?

XEBEC Ceramic Stone has grinding power on the tip.
Set the angle in relation to the workpiece surface at approximaately 5 to 45 degrees.

Is it possible to use the side of the ceramic stone?

No, for the stick type, there is no grinding power on the sides. Use the tip to polish the workpiece.
For the rod type, both the tip and sides can be used.

Can it be used on vibrating tools?

Yes, it can be used with ultrasonic, pneumatic and electric tools.
*It is recommended to use XEBEC Stone Heat-Resistant when using an ultrasonic tool.

Can it be used with oil applied?

Yes, it can also be used with water-soluble and oil-based polishing fluid, kerosene and other fluids. Polishing efficiency is better in wet polishing.

How can it be formed?

Use diamond disc blade or sandpaper (carbide abrasive grains) to form the tip.

What are the suitable applications for XEBEC Ceramic Stone™ Pencil?

It is ideal for polishing narrow and thin parts such as the markings on metal mold.

Can I use a general product for the holder of XEBEC Ceramic Stone Pencil?

Yes, you can use a mechanical pencil for drafting with diameters of Φ1.3mm and Φ0.7mm. Use ceramic stones with dimensions of 0.9mm x 0.9mm and 0.5mm x 0.5mm, respectively.

What is the difference with XEBEC Meister Finish?

The binder is heat resistant up to 200℃ and suitable for ultrasonic tools.

Can it be used on tools other than ultrasonic tools?

Yes, it can be used with pneumatic and electric vibrating tools. It can be used for hand polishing as well.

Is it possible to produce items with grits or sizez not in the lineup?

No, it is not possible.

Does it have diamond on the surface?

Unlike diamond disc blade, diamond abrasive grains are evenly dispersed in whole. As such, you can use not on the tip but also the sides.

What kind of materials can be polished?

Materials with HRC57 or higher including cemented carbide and hardened steel. For materials with HRC57 or less, polishing efficiency is better than XEBEC Meister Finish.

Is it possible to produce items with grits or sizez not in the lineup?

No, it is not possible.

What is the difference with XEBEC Meister Finish?

It uses a soft binder with rubber elasticity, so it can polish soft materials (e.g. copper electrode, aluminum mold) without scratches.
